As the race that stops the nation runs this afternoon at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, locals in one of the northernmost parts of mainland Australia will have their eyes on a completely different set of horses. Forget the corporate tents and highly trained horses of the Melbourne Cup, because at Punsand Bay near the tip of the Cape York Peninsula you are more likely to see wild animals and homemade outfits.
The Cape York Cup, held at the remote beach location, brings in locals from five nearby Indigenous communities. It is the third year the cup has been held and organiser Jack Colquhoun hopes around people will attend today’s event. The brumbies are brought to the racetrack and kept in a makeshift stable by the beach. Along with the two races at the event, the Cape York Cup also features the traditional race-meet fashion competition.
