Argon isotopic dating is one of the most important techniques for estimating the ages of rocks and can be used on very small samples. It has been used to assign reliable ages to the Earth and numerous meteorites. This second edition covers the standard principles and methods and incorporates many of new developments from the last decade.
It covers the basis of the method, technical aspects, data presentation, diffusion theory, thermochronology, and many applications and case studies. Read more Read less. The extensive calibration and standardization procedures undertaken ensure that the results of analytical studies carried out in our laboratories will gain immediate international credibility, enabling Brazilian students and scientists to conduct forefront research in earth and planetary sciences. Modern geochronology requires high analytical precision and accuracy, improved spatial resolution, and statistically significant data sets, requirements often beyond the capabilities of traditional geochronological methods.
The fully automated facility will provide high precision analysis on a timely basis, meeting the often rigid requirements of the mineral and oil exploration industry. We will also discuss future developments for the laboratory. The project enabled importing the most advanced technology for the implementation of this dating technique in Brazil.

The Rushan gold deposit, which is located in the Jiaodong Peninsula, is Currently the largest lode type gold deposit in china in terms of gold resources in single lode. It is characterized with multi-stage mineralization. The result shows that the quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration occurred at ca. This means that the Rushan gold deposit was formed through multi-stage hydrothermal events.
It is proved that the Rushan deposit and other gold deposits in the Jiaodong Peninsula were formed in Mesozoic under the condition of tectonic regime transaction, strong thinning of lithosphere, and large-scale metallogeny. This new data helped us to understand much moor of the gold metallogeny and geodynamic settings in the Jiaodong Peninsula. Magnetostratigraphic studies are widely used in conjunction with the geomagnetic polarity time scale GPTS to date events in the range 0 to 5 million years ago. A critical tie point on the GPTS is the potassium-argon age of the most recent Brunhes-Matuyama geomagnetic field reversal. Astronomical values for the forcing frequencies observed in the oxygen isotope record in Ocean Drilling Project site suggest that the age of this last reversal is ka thousand years ago , whereas the potassium-argon-based estimate is ka.
The astronomically based technique appears to be a viable tool for dating young sedimentary sequences. Several variants of the GPTS for example, 1 have been used in studies related to geological events in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. But K-Ar data obtained during the last decade for reversals older than 5 Ma 3 suggest that there are inaccuracies in the middle to late Miocene sections of the GPTS calculated in this manner.

Argon-argon dating works because potassium decays to argon with a known decay constant. However, potassium also decays to 40 Ca much more often than it decays to 40 Ar. This necessitates the inclusion of a branching ratio 9. This led to the formerly-popular potassium-argon dating method. However, scientists discovered that it was possible to turn a known proportion of the potassium into argon by irradiating the sample, thereby allowing scientists to measure both the parent and the daughter in the gas phase.
There are several steps that one must take to obtain an argon-argon date: First, the desired mineral phase s must be separated from the others.
The first parallel application of the two geochronometers to Orgnac 3 yields generally consistent results, which point to the reliability of the two methods. Understanding excess argon by ultra-high resolution 40Ar/39Ar laserprobe analysis
Potassium has three naturally occurring isotopes: 39 K, 40 K and 41 K. The positron emission mechanism mentioned in Chapter 2. In addition to 40 Ar, argon has two more stable isotopes: 36 Ar and 38 Ar.
It is concluded that pyrite acts as a partially closed system for argon, but that the 40Ar/39Ar pyrite dating method has the potential to see through later thermal.
Ar-Ar methods. This method is based on the occurrence of the radioactive isotope 40 K of potassium in rocks. This isotope decays to 40 Ca and 40 Ar, the last of which is used for K-Ar age dating as it accumulates in the rock over time. If the ratio of 40 K and 40 Ar is known, the unknown time can be calculated. The ideal model conditions may not be met due to the presence of inherited argon, loss of radiogenic argon and deformation and recrystallization of the mineral Dodson, The actual accumulation of 40 Ar in a crystal structure depends not only on the time involved, but also on diffusion behavior, the temperatures the rock has experienced since its formation, cooling rate, grain size and deformation state of the crystal McDougall and Harrison, For the application of this method to age dating it is essential to define a closure temperature.
The closure temperature range of a mineral is the temperature range over which a mineral changes from an open system to a closed system for the isotopes of interest. The most important process interfering with the accumulation of radiogenic isotopes is recrystallization, as this enhances the mobility of atoms. Thermally activated volume diffusion may play an important role in slowly cooled systems.
Volume diffusion depends on the cooling rate, the activation energy for diffusion, and the geometry and size of the diffusion domain. The closure temperatures of the minerals dated in this project will be discussed in chapter 0. In order to determine the irradiation conditions, a standard mineral of known K-Ar age is irradiated with the samples to be dated. This way an irradiation parameter J can be defined:.

Despite the small analytical error of 0. On the other hand, the completely independent absolute dating method of astronomical tuning is characterised by an extremely small total error which is in the order of 0. In addition we propose to carry out additional fusion experiments on sanidine crystals to demonstrate that xenocrystic contamination is indeed responsible for observed inconsistencies in the intercalibration. Finally, we intend to apply the new astronomical standard to dating magnetostratigraphically well constrained ash layers of Paleogene age as a critical independent check on the correctness of the astronomical tuning of this time interval.
Summary Despite the small analytical error of 0.
The older method required splitting samples into two for separate potassium and argon measurements, while the newer method requires only one rock fragment or mineral grain and uses a single measurement of argon isotopes. The sample is generally crushed and single crystals of a mineral or fragments of rock hand-selected for analysis. These are then irradiated to produce 39 Ar from 39 K. The sample is then degassed in a high-vacuum mass spectrometer via a laser or resistance furnace. Heating causes the crystal structure of the mineral or minerals to degrade, and, as the sample melts, trapped gases are released.
The gas may include atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen, and argon, and radiogenic gases, like argon and helium, generated from regular radioactive decay over geologic time. The J factor relates to the fluence of the neutron bombardment during the irradiation process; a denser flow of neutron particles will convert more atoms of 39 K to 39 Ar than a less dense one. However, in a metamorphic rock that has not exceeded its closure temperature the age likely dates the crystallization of the mineral.
Thus, a granite containing all three minerals will record three different “ages” of emplacement as it cools down through these closure temperatures. Thus, although a crystallization age is not recorded, the information is still useful in constructing the thermal history of the rock. Dating minerals may provide age information on a rock, but assumptions must be made. Minerals usually only record the last time they cooled down below the closure temperature, and this may not represent all of the events which the rock has undergone, and may not match the age of intrusion.

Different lithologies impure marble, eclogite and granitic orthogneiss sampled from a restricted area of the coesite-bearing Brossasco—Isasca Unit Dora Maira Massif have been investigated to examine the behaviour of 40 Ar— 39 Ar and Rb—Sr systems in phengites developed under ultrahigh-pressure UHP metamorphism. Mineralogical and petrological data indicate that zoned phengites record distinct segments of the P — T path: prograde, peak to early retrograde in the marble, peak to early retrograde in the eclogite, and late retrograde in the orthogneiss.
Besides major element zoning, ion microprobe analysis of phengite in the marble also reveals a pronounced zoning of trace elements including Rb and Sr.
