Although pre-historic man’s use of the surrounding countryside, with its natural vantage points to develop small dwellings, it was the Saxons who first created the farmsteads on which Ottery was founded. The town name originated from the first manor house occupied by the Canons of Rouen named ‘Otrei’. It wasn’t until that “St Mary” was added to the place-name in honour of the town church. Ottery was soon to became a thriving market town, by charter of Henry III. John de Grandisson, Bishop of Exeter, modified Ottery’s Church, an imposing structure that today still dominates the town’s skyline, from its original structure in Originally of Norman design, it was extended and modified so that it looked like a mini replica of Exeter Cathedral.

Its weathercock is now over years old and is believed to be the oldest in Europe. During the infamous period of European history that has been characterized by the population’s long struggle against the Black Death Bubonic Plague , over half the population of Ottery St Mary was wiped out. It had a turbulent history over the following years with sporadic outbreaks of the Bubonic Plague until the town settled down with a new identity during the English Civil War. In , with the country split in half and fighting each other, Ottery St Mary became a busy garrison town under the command of Sir Thomas Fairfax.

The history books indicate that Oliver Cromwell visited and stayed in Ottery St Mary when he came to survey the progress of his army in the south west of England. He allowed his troops to remain in the town after their campaigns, in order that they should have some rest and recuperation. During his stay, Fairfax and Cromwell set up their campaign headquarters in Ottery’s Chanters House where they plotted the next stage of their campaign and their next.

The church is part of “Churches Together in Ottery St Mary” which includes the churches of four other demoninations in the town. It was consecrated in , at which time the manor and patronage of the church belonged to Rouen Cathedral , as it had from before the Norman invasion.

Pevsner assumes that the tower-transepts and the outer walls of the chancel date back to , and that the towers were built in imitation of those at Exeter. Other renovations were completed circa “principally expansion of the north nave aisle, complete with elaborate, fan-vaulted ceiling and pendant bosses”.

In John Grandisson , Bishop of Exeter, bought the manor and advowson from Rouen and on 22 January established a collegiate foundation with forty members. He rebuilt much of the church, and the present nave, chancel, aisles and Lady chapel date from this time. The nave is of five bays, and the chancel, unusually long in proportion, is of six, with vestry chapels to north and south. The church is noted for its painted roof and early sixteenth-century fan vaulted aisle, the Dorset Aisle, designed and commissioned by Cecily Bonville, 7th Baroness Harington , whose first husband was Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset.

Nestling in the beautiful gently rolling East Devon countryside, Ottery St Mary is a charmingly unspoilt town. Ottery St Mary is one of the south-west’s oldest towns, dating back over years. The towns streets are narrow and winding, giving ‘Ottery’ a special character. The town has many examples of fine Georgian buildings, especially around the eastern end of the church. Set on a hill overlooking the town, this 13th century church began its life as a humble parish church.

In John de Grandisson , the Bishop of Exeter , began its radical reconstruction; modelling it on Exeter’s Cathedral – creating a sanctuary for piety and learning. Much of John de Grandisson’s redeveloped St Mary’s was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries , but the Grammar School was later to be re-established in the town. During the 18th century Rev John Coleridge was appointed as Master at the school; later becoming the vicar.

Rev John Coleridge fathered a total of 13 children, the youngest – born in , was the famous poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The owners of the property supported the wrong side during the Civil War, causing them to fall into dept and the houses fortunes to decline.
