Tinder recently announced that it is now testing a new ‘Face to Face’ video chat smartphone app feature. As this is a feature that’s in testing, it is currently limited in its availability. Here’s what you need to know about Tinder’s Face to Face video calls. From the delay in reopening Disneyland in the United States, to a series of movies being pushed back , COVID hasn’t spared the love lives of individuals either. At the same time, from celebrities performing concerts to the entire workforce for major companies, everything has adjusted to online.

Face to Face doesn’t just randomly allow you to video call, since the app enables it on a match-by-match basis. Tinder is also enforcing quality control over the video calling feature. This design is intentional so that both callers can see how they look important with a dating app , and avoid any unwanted elements in the background.

The feature is attempting to add an extra level of intimacy to the service at a time when intimacy is hard to come by, in general. However, Tinder appears keen to ensure that additional intimacy does not result in any unwanted or pressured situations through the use of consent. For example, while Face to Face video calls require consent to begin with, neither Tinder member will be aware that the other has opted into a video call until they have also opted in.

Many of us can recall how hard it was to date in pre-pandemic days. Even with apps like Match and Tinder, dating was still weird — or at least it seems weird to those of us who stopped dating before dating apps were the norm. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how dating during the pandemic requires ingenuity. As we explored in that column, we still have to do the extra work to make meaningful connections on video apps, to make it feel genuine and special.

During that series on pandemic dating, I met Sacha Nasan, co-founder of Blindlee, a new dating app with a unique feature. This female-friendly app matches strangers. During that first video call, each person starts at percent blurred, but this is where it becomes a kind of female-controlled app. Women control the blurring percentage. Blindlee is coming along at the right time, too, when the world is seeing a shift to video dating during the pandemic as many people are just not ready to go on physical dates yet.

When I asked Nasan if he used the app to find love, he said he answers calls from users who call randomly. This last part is important because even Nasan admits Blindlee should be one of several apps in your dating app arsenal. In fact, successful online daters admit to using more than one app at a time. We developed Blindlee in our spare time. Essentially this garage-style side project took importance quicker than we thought, which is a good problem to have.
